PHILIPS 'Challenge' 10 inch terrestrial globe, 1938

This is a rare table globe from the British company Philips showing European borders prior to the outbreak of WW2. It can be dated to 1938 as Austria has been annexed by Germany but Czechoslovakia is still intact.

The globe is constructed from two pasteboard hemispheres with hand-applied composite paper gores, joined at the equator. It is mounted on a die cast metal base and die cast meridian, both finished in gloss black enamel.

The map is in outstanding condition, retaining full colour and with minimal marking. However, the varnish has darkened with age revealing uneven application in places, particularly on the Pacific coast of South America.

The map and base have been carefully cleaned; overall the globe is in exceptional vintage condition.

Diameter 10 inches (250mm); overall height 360mm
