PHILIPS 'Challenge' 10 inch terrestrial globe, 1959

This is a fine table globe from the British company Philips, dated 1959. It is notable for the unusual age-related colour change. Usually, reds are the first colours to fade but here they remain dominant against the parchment-like background hues (the oceans would originally have been a sky-blue), giving the globe a uniquely distinctive look.

The globe is constructed from two pasteboard hemispheres with hand-applied composite paper gores, joined at the equator. It features the trademark Everite stepped black bakelite base with a chromed die cast meridian, and an aluminium time dial at the North Pole.

The map has been carefully cleaned and is in good overall condition with some permanent staining and marking but no loss. The base and mount have also been cleaned and polished and are in very good to excellent condition.

Diameter 10 inches (250mm); overall height 315mm
