PHILIPS 'Challenge' 10 inch terrestrial globe, 1959

This 1959 example of the classic table globe by the British company Philips is notable for the unusual age-related colour change. Usually, reds are the first colours to fade, but here the dark pink used to depict Commonwealth countries has remained dominant against the parchment-like background hues. (the oceans would originally have been a sky-blue).

The globe is constructed from two pasteboard hemispheres with hand-applied composite paper gores, joined at the equator. It features the trademark Everite stepped black bakelite base with a chromed die cast meridian, and an aluminium time dial at the North Pole.

The map has been carefully cleaned and is in good overall condition despite the colour change, with some permanent staining and marking but no loss. The base and mount have also been cleaned and polished and are in very good condition.
