PHILIPS 'Challenge' 13.5 inch terrestrial globe, 1959

This is a large and impressive table globe from the British company Philips, dated 1959.

The globe is constructed from two pasteboard hemispheres with hand-applied composite paper gores, joined at the equator. It is mounted on a turned, solid beech base supporting a chromed and graduated meridian, with an aluminium time dial at the North Pole.

The map, which has been carefully cleaned, shows overall fine surface crazing and some wear and permanent staining - most obvious in the North Atlantic (pictured). There is also slight raising and discolouration of the seams. However the map still retains very vivid colours, which mitigate these signs of age. The base and mount have also been cleaned and polished and are in excellent condition.

Overall this is a very attractive globe, which displays very well.

Diameter 13.5 inches (343mm); overall height 460mm
