PHILIPS 'Library' 6 inch terrestrial globe, circa 1956

This is a small desk or table globe from the British company Philips. It is notable for its fine Arts and Crafts style solid mahogany base and unusual cantilever mount. It can be dated to circa 1956 as Anglo-Egyptian Sudan is now Sudan but Gold Coast is not yet Ghana (both 1956).

The globe is further distinguished by its seamless equator, being constructed in the traditional manner from a pasteboard sphere with 12 hand-applied paper gores (other Philips globes were typically made using composite paper gores, joined at the equator).

The map, which has been carefully cleaned, shows some slight scuffing and marking but is otherwise bright and clear. The mahogany base and aluminium mount have also been cleaned and and are likewise in excellent condition.
