SMITHS bakelite cased 8 day wall clock with 9 inch dial, dated 1949

The design of this clock dates to the mid-1940s. It was once a familiar sight in schools, hospitals, factories, stations and offices across the UK and Commonwealth.

This is an early example, dated 03 May 1949. The dial is aluminium (steel was in short supply after the war), so there is none of the foxing and degradation associated with the thin steel dials of the period. There is some uneven reflectivity in the paint finish (shown in the photos of the dial in isolation), but this is only evident under directed light, and even less so behind the glass. There is also some slight staining under the sight ring but again this is barely noticeable when the clock is hanging. The hour hand is an interesting indicator of post-war shortages, having been cut from an aluminium clock dial blank (pictured).

The clock is powered by the well proven Smiths 8 day 2 inch movement with platform escapement and will run for over a week on a full wind.

The clock has been disassembled, cleaned, serviced, sensitively restored as required and the case polished. It is supplied in excellent condition and full working order with instructions on setting up and regulating plus guidance on aftercare.
