This is an attractive and unusual 8 inch dial clock by Smiths with a rare subsidiary seconds dial. It is unsigned with no identifying marks, but it may have seen use on the railways.
It is driven by a front-winding and front-regulating Smiths Empire Marine EW264 movement with jewelled platform escapement dated September 1958. This movement was more commonly used in marine clocks, as the name suggests. The front of the case is solid oak with a golden honey finish; the back box is pine. The screen-printed steel dial is riveted to a steel false plate. The hinged spun brass bezel holds a flat glass and silvered sight ring.
The clock has been fully disassembled, cleaned and serviced as appropriate and the case has been wax-polished. The dial shows some permanent light staining, but it is still clear with no loss and therefore has been left completely original. All other components are in very good to excellent original condition. It had at some time been serviced by Thwaites of Kendal and their labels have been left intact.
The clock is supplied in full working order with instructions on setting up and regulating plus guidance on aftercare.
